Bruno Mars and the Bible

Why I bought “Grenade” by Bruno Mars, I will never tell – but as I was listening in my truck, the following continued to flood my mind.

“This sounds like Jesus. This reminds me of the Gospel.”

Now, I don’t know all of the history behind this song. But by reading the lyrics you can tell it is about a man who loves a woman and she never returns his love.

Here are they lyrics that struck a chord with my gospel seeking heart and mind:

——————————————

“Gave you all I had
And you tossed it in the trash
You tossed it in the trash, you did
To give me all your love is all I ever asked,
Cause what you don’t understand is…

I’d catch a grenade for ya
Throw my hand on a blade for ya
I’d jump in front of a train for ya
You know I’d do anything for ya
I would go through all this pain,
Take a bullet straight through my brain,
Yes, I would die for ya baby;
But you won’t do the same

No, no, no, no
Black, black, black and blue beat me till I’m numb
Tell the devil I said “hey” when you get back to where you’re from…

Gave you all I had
And you tossed it in the trash
You tossed it in the trash, you did
To give me all your love is all I ever asked.”

Remind you of anything in the Bible? Revelation 2:4-5? The whole book of Hosea? Numerous passages in Isaiah and Jeremiah (particularly when Israel is playing ‘the whore’ after other gods)?

What do you think? Am I off my rocker?

  1. I got a bit of a laugh from this, Jeff, but not because of the message. I laughed more at the Bruno Mars-Bible connection. I think this might be just too much of a stretch for my tastes. That being said; I like the attempt to bridge Christianity and pop-culture, something you’ve always been good at.

  2. Thanks for the comment bro!!!

It for sure isn’t exactly the same, but I felt like their are some shadows of truth represented in Grenade.

He wants this girls love, she tosses it way. I thought about how many times I have minimized God’s love for me.

Bruno is willing to die for this girl. Jesus did die for his church (as the Bible calls at times: His bride).

Just got my brain thinking. Great to hear from ya man. We still gotta do lunch soon!

  3. I love the comparison. I have another one for you. I dont think I have ever listened to the whole song, but have heard the title plenty of times it’s called I was born this was by lady gaga. I remember plenty of discussions with brothers and sisters in the past about how horrible homo sexuality is. Family memembers being shuned and not allowed to come to Christmans and or Thanksgiving events. You hit on this subject the first week we attended the Redeemer Church. I believe what the bibles says that we were born in sin. I think each and every one of us have our bents toward sin. For some its gambling, porn, addiction, and homo sexuality. When that song came out it sort of confirmed to me that some people that are practicing homosexuality were born the way. They just have chosen to give into that sin. Now I was born with whats seems like an addictive personality, and have struggled with fornacation in the past. But God has set me free I chose to serve him and not the sin I was born under. Most say you were not born that way that is your choice. Well I feel they got half of the statement right. It is the persons choice, but most likely they were born with that struggle. Sin is a Sin. We need to insulate ourselves from the World not isolate ourselves it. Sorry the Bruno Mars got me going. Adam T
